TheatreWorks Troupe Industry Showcase
Adam Marcus' & Abby Casey's Industry Showcase (11/18)
From the email I sent to Abby with my notes on this rockstar showcase:
Again, GREAT job. Here are my actor-specific notes on Thursday's showcase. Hope this info is helpful. Look for it on my blog, when I finally get that updated: Shows I've Seen is the title of that one). I'm behind by a few months in updating, but I'll get this up there as soon as I can.
These notes will be stream-of-consciousness from the night's scribbles. Please let me know if you need help deciphering. ;)
- TheatreWorks troupe (class led by Adam Marcus, director). Most talent repped by Abby Casey, who co-produces.
- invited by Brent Strickland, a showcase-participating actor I met in July at the SAG Conservatory at AFI. He's good people and his manager Abby is a fellow Atlantan Brent is very eager for me to meet. Awesome. Tonight will be the night. Always love meeting fellow Hotlantans!
- Theatre Palisades: good space (and CLOSE to the new homestead. That rocks)
- director leads off with a thank you. His liner notes in the headshot binder are really, sincerely wonderful. I cannot wait to meet Adam. He truly loves what he does. That's so cool.
- too warm and stuffy over time in theatre
- generally a better selection of scenes than we're used to
- everyone talks VERY quickly (direction?)
- direction is generally GREAT. I just don't like the high-speed speak for EVERYONE. Some folks simply wouldn't speak so quickly.
- not sure how I feel about so many scenes with each actor up two or three times. Sometimes that backfires with 2nd scene talking me out of loving what I saw in the 1st scene. But I LOVED the atmosphere/one-liner performances, once I got used to seeing it. GREAT support from other actors. Actually, this won me over. If I could see this done this well all the time, I'd be a huge fan of multiple scenes by the same actors.
- sc. 1: cute material. Catherine Lane: sounds like Mary Gallagher. Big, confident girl. Steve Peña: whiny, big character. Fun.
- sc. 2: Melissa Corkern: cute, round, short redhead. She's familiar. I like her style. Scott Maguire: playing blind. Davy Hewes type.
- sc. 3: cute girls! Cori Bright: very cute. No HS in kit. She's great. Carlos Torres: one-liner.
- sc. 4: West Wing. Emily Johnson: cute blonde. Tall. I like her style. Ted Fenton: short Michael J. Fox type. Joanie Tomsky: one-liner.
- sc. 5: potty mouth scene. Jennifer Nelson: long legs. Chad Henderson: flashed us from his robe! Ack! He'd be sooo much better if not rushing the lines. GOOD creep!
- sc. 6: captive pee scene. Quick. Jude B. Lanston: VERY good.
- sc. 7: Boys on the Side. Catherine Lane: she's good! Kaiyana Rain: a rounder Lissa Paalo type. Lovely. She'll be a great type with a little more training. Just needs confidence and passion.
- sc. 8: Return to Me. Christina Harmon: good, but over the top. Brent Strickland: too quiet in this scene.
- sc. 9: Tootsie. Anders Hasselblad: Weasely type. '70s coke fiend vibe. Great type. Chad Henderson: fine work. Young. Star quality.
- sc. 10: A Few Good Men. Vivan Dugré: cute, tan. Jay Jablonski: rage, Ross on "Friends" look. Brent Strickland: such a good type. GREAT line to end on. Simple. "You're a dick." Awesome.
- sc. 11: Alison Reeves: kind of forgettable. She needs to find her type and anchor to it. Daniel Spangler: too quiet. Only okay scene.
- sc. 12: Kissing Jessica Stein. I see this scene a lot in showcases. Melissa Corkern: quirky. A good type. Emily Johnson: angular and sexy. Tall.
- sc. 13: Ugh! My least favorite "mime." When you have been handed a FULL cup of drink... act like that cup is FULL! Don't tip it up like it's empty!! Augh! (Sorry. Pet peeve.) Ryan Seaton: female. Very nerdy. Looks NOTHING like her headshot. Needs a good on-camera class. Jude B. Lanston: wore a sports coat two sizes too small. Weird scene about cutting. Clearly, I became distracted during this one.
- sc. 14: Petra Areskoug: Scandinavian accent? Brent Strickland: Dweeby type. Weird but funny scene. In bathroom on cell, cussing. Fun scene. Would like to make a few adjustments and see again. Fun. Can't wait to see Brent do more of this bumbling date guy. He's so much fun to watch!
- sc. 15: 25th Hour? Not sure. Cute scene (sex talk) between two guys. Potty mouth, but good.
- sc. 16: Bob and Carol, Ted and Alice. Jeff Roper: a dark-haired, young Ed Martin type. Gals = too weak here.
- sc. 17: The Cooler. Steve Peña: mousy. Great type. Carlos Torres: good heavy. Excellent.
- sc. 18: Colleen Crozier: cute, Melissa Peterman type (maybe more like Amy Mills?). Daniel Spangler: good "cute" boy. Sincere.
- sc. 19: cute scene. Joanie Tomsky: only okay. Chris Kendra: blond Rhys Ifans type. Great scene about how many sex partners anyone has had.
- sc. 20: Bullets Over Broadway. Petra Areskoug: should do "15 Minutes of FEM," definitely. Needs accent reduction work to be really mainstream, but she's on her way. Anders Hasselblad: gaunt. I want him to do strictly evil bad guys ala "Die Hard 3." That would work well for him.
- sc. 21: Vivan Dugré: cute. I'd like to see her "go for it" in an against-type role.
- sc. 22: Author, Author. 1/2 scene done in audience (too dark for that choice). Debra Sullivan: NJ sitcom wife. Should totally do "King of Queens" or something like that. Adam Marcus: NY thug type. Fun! Cute scene!
- sc. 23: Gilmore Girls. Jeff Roper: A little Ed Martin meets John Cusack type. I see a great spot for him in my regular casting files. Great vibe. Talented young man.
- sc. 24: Funny scene! Vagina enlargement? So funny! Such a versatile bunch. Ryan Seaton: reminds me of Courtney Denney. Ted Fenton: excellent straight man. He was perfectly directed in this scene. Carlos Torres: wow. Really versatile. Greasy this time. Really great. Catherine Lane: great versatility. Doing an '80s Jersey Girl here. Great! I've decided she's a treasure here. Really great work! Fun!
- sc. 25: Kill Bill, Vol. II. Cori Bright: pregnant bride. Her "bun" was way fake. There are better builds for that costume piece, but this is such a minor note. Brad Arnold: punky type. Cute. Goofy.
- sc. 26: Very funny. Colleen Crozier: so cute! Seriously, I'm crazy about her. She can do no wrong. VERY funny. Should do "15 Minutes of FEM" if she hasn't already. Total pro. Jay Jablonski: talented, Mike Sametz type. Great abs. Smoldering.
- Here's the thing. I see tons of showcases. TONS. And this one, by far, left me with so much love for actors, their process, and their passion for the lives they lead. Kudos to Adam, Abby, and the whole gang of actors for doing such amazing work. Seriously, this was my favorite showcase! Well done, all!
